Rights and obligations as a student

Your rights

  • We help you as well as possible and invest annually in new bicycles, training and recruitment of staff... Of course, you cannot expect the impossible. At some times it is particularly busy and a ready-to-use solution cannot be delivered immediately.
  • The first week is covered by a warranty. If you have a problem with your bicycle, you can come by and we’ll help you out.
  • Some people develop a close relationship with their bicycle over time and personalize it with stickers, flowers,… You’re free to do these things, but remember you are obliged to return the bicycle in the condition you received it.
  • You can always make use of the bicycle repair workshop. You can repair your bicycle yourself there and pay only for the components. We can also repair the bicycle for you, in which case you will be charged for both the components and the labour costs.
  • You can always contact us with questions about theft prevention and to acquire an extra lock or other bicycle accessories.
  • You can always extend your contract, as long as you can submit a valid student card or staff card.
  • If you’re away for several weeks and have no safe parking space to store your bicycle, we can store it for you (places are limited).

Your obligations

  • You are fully responsible for following up your contract and respecting the duration of the rental period.
  • You treat your rental bicycle with diligent care. Poorly maintained bicycles will be retrieved by us. At the end of the contract you’ll return your bicycle properly cleaned. If it isn’t properly cleaned, 5 Euro for cleaning costs will be charged.
  • You are responsible for keeping your contact information up-to-date. Most of our communication will happen via mail, so make sure your e-mail address is correct and check your mail regularly.
  • Always use both of the supplied locks. If you do not use them, you’ll risk a penalty. The first time we retrieve your bicycle: 10 Euro; the second time: 20 Euro and if the bicycle is retrieved with the keys in the lock(s), you’ll pay 25 Euro.
  • Interim maintenance is not mandatory. You can always come by to lubricate your chain or adjust the brakes.
  • If you return your bicycle after the agreed rental period, you’ll receive a fine.
    • < 7 days: 5 Euro
    • < 1 month: 10 Euro
    • < 2 months: 20 Euro
    • < 3 months: 30 Euro
    • From 3 months and onwards: 20 Euro per month.
  • If you fail to comply with one or more obligations, a compensation fee may be claimed of 10%, with a minimum of 125 Euro.
  • In case of theft or vandalism, you must report this in a timely and correct manner. It must be reported to both the police and vzw De Fietsambassade Gent within 24 hours after taking note and you must personally submit an official proof of the police report and the key(s) of the bicycle locks to vzw De Fietsambassade Gent within 5 days.
  • Are you not insured for theft or vandalism? In case of theft you will lose your deposit and you will also have to pay 175 Euro (Basic bicycle and Yellow bicycle) or 275 euro (Comfort bicycle and Folding bicycle). In case of vandalism all costs are charged.
  • Are you insured? In case of theft you only lose your deposit. You do not have to pay anything extra. In case of vandalism you pay a maximum of 60 Euro. Of course, this is only the case if you reported these things in a timely and correct manner, the rental period has not expired,...).
